1.Insect bites and stings- First aid
We’re biking with regular traffic, we’re cycling to the mountain area, we’re moving to the open air enjoy wonderful summer time.
All little animal start actively in the summer time too, I mean mosquito, bee, spider and other insects.

Most reactions to insect bites and stings are mild, causing little more than redness. Itching, stinging or minor swelling.
To take care of an insect bite, here are things you can do:
- Remove to a safe area to avoid more bites or stings. If needed, remove the stinger
- If you cannot remove a tick, or if its mouthparts remind embedded, try to use small tweezers to move them before getting medical care.
- Wash bite area with your drinking water you bring for cycling.
- If you had antergan, after-bite spray or cream which can use.If you do not have them right away, use when you will go home.
Some people have more severe reactions to bites or stings. Children may be more affected by bites or stings than adults in most of the insect bites and stings.
2.Cuts and scrapes First aid
In outdoor cycling, minor cuts and scrapes usually don’t require a trip to the emergency room. But if it’s serious, you should find the right time seeking for an emergency.
In some of first aid magazine or first aid training center, they usually say use soap and water to clear your cuts and scrape.
Every time, when I read about those, the first question pop my head:
where can I get a piece of soap in the outdoor??? Do you bring soap for biking? Well, at least for me, I am not.
Instead, I would rather use drinking water I bring for a bike trip and use bicycle first aid components.
Here is what I was done:
- Wash my hands with drinking water, this helps me avoid infection, also put on disposable protective gloves if it’s available.
- Use Antiseptic Towelette, to clean the wounds quickly. If you do not have this, use daily wipe.
- Stop the bleeding: Minor cuts and scrapes usually stop bleeding on their own. If not, apply gentle sterile pressure bandage or clear cloth and elevate the wound.
For me, I would rather use pressure bandage I prepared, tear down the piece of fabric cloth; I will take “ years” of time without any scissors.

3.Bruising & Stress Fractures First aid
A stress fracture is a small crack in a bone or severe bruising within a bone. The weight-bearing bones of the foot and lower leg are especially vulnerable to stress fractures because of the repetitive forces they must absorb during cycling.
The description from AAOS ( American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons):
Stress fractures occur most often in the second and third metatarsals in the foot, which are thinner (and often longer) than the adjacent first metatarsal.
This is the area of greatest impact on your foot as you push.
Stress fractures are also common in arm and clavicle.
Here is what we can do for cycling Fractures First Aid:
1) Check the environment first, stop the traffic pass from an injured just in case that the injured got the 2nd injury from busy traffic around. Give out the alarm signal several meters away if it’s possible, just like use traffic signal if our car has some emergency on road.
2) Talk to the injured which of his body feel pain and keep them still while you steady the injured limb with your hands. But should avoid moving them too much.
3) Use blood stopper if it’s bleeding quickly. Use gauze or bandage from bicycle touring first aid kit stopping bleeding first. Or use a napkin if you do not have first aid kit.
4) If possible to get any piece of fabric, need to keep secure the uninjured leg and place support padding/extract cloth around the injury leg.
5) Seeking for an emergency ambulance as quickly as possible.
4. Bleeding: Nosebleeds First Aid & Severe bleeding First aid
A nosebleed is when blood flows from one or both nostrils. It’s normally caused by the tiny blood vessels inside the nostrils being ruptured.
Most nosebleeds are minor and only last a few minutes, but they can be dangerous if someone loses a lot of blood.
The priority is to control the bleeding after falling from the bike and keep their airway open.

1) Sit upright and lean forward
By remaining upright, we reduce blood pressure in the veins of the nose. This discourages further bleeding. Sitting forward will help you avoid swallowing blood, which can irritate your stomach.
2) Pinch your nose. Use your thumb and index finger to pinch nostrils shut. Breathe through the mouth for about 5-10 minutes, which depended on your bleeding situation.
3) Encourage them not to speak, swallow, cough, spit or sniff because this may break blood clots that may have started to form in the nose.
In Severe bleeding First aid, if the injured bleeding too much, besides the stop bleeding, we still can find clothes or emergency blanket to cover his body just in case the body temperature drop down quick before an ambulance will arrival.

5.Dislocation First aid
Cycling dislocation is injuries in which the ends of your bones are forced from normal positions by fall down from the bike.
Dislocation usually involves the body’s larger joints. In cycling first aid situation, usually, happen on the shoulder.
Seeking for medical help immediately before you try to do anything, then:
Try to keep the peace of the injured, and help them release pain and relax.

6. Head injury & Fainting First aid
Head injuries can be potentially serious, In 2016, 1,252,498 road users have died, the report by WHO ( World Health Organization ). Head injuries are the main cause of death and disability. Most of the deaths are preventable.

Wear the bicycle helmet is the effective way to prevent the head injury if falling off the bicycle outdoor.
If someone has experienced a head injury, and they are fully conscious, help them to sit down in a comfortable position and get him a cold compress or if nearby the resultant, asked for some ice cube. At the same time, if it’s serious indeed, call to the emergency.
7.Heart attack first aid
Someone having a heart attack may experience any of those situations: shortness of breath, sweating, pain, uncomfortable pressure and so on.
If you saw those symptoms from your cyclist friends, they maybe have a heart attack, have doubt check with them whether they have heart attack history.
Can you ask him/her have any heart attack medicine somewhere in the pocket? if so, get pieces pills immediately to release the pain.
Stop biking and find a cool place in the open air, for 15 minutes rest till he or she felt better again.
8. Dehydration First aid
