If you’re not a morning person, you will not understand why someone could possibly get up so early until you get out of your bed early for running, biking or any other actives.
Before you jump into and make it become your daily routine, get some equipment preparation is necessary.
In China, there is a number of morning exercises you can see in the park in the early morning. People are running, dancing, walking, play badminton, play tennis, and play Tai Ji and others.
Along the coastline in Huan Dao Road Xiamen City where I’m live in, you can see that running; swimming and cycling would be commons actives start from 5 o’clock to 8 o’clock AM. And the number of people will increase over the weekend.
For me, I do both running and cycling currently. Sometimes I running in the park, and sometimes cycling along the beautiful coast in Huang Dao Road in Xiamen, China.
It’s so amazing to get some fresh air before getting start the busy day. Cycling along the coastline with the beautiful sea view would make you a day in the fall season, comfortable and cozy riding alone or with cycling friends.
Today, I would like to talk about 9 basic cycling stuff you should take for morning riding.
Biking in the early morning, a bicycle would be your top priority tool that you have to bring with. There are different bicycles you can choose base on your own situation.
If you get close to the mountain area, chose a mountain bike would be more convenient. If you like the speed, a road bike would be a good choice.
You’re on your mountain bike, riding over rocks, across streams, and overall types of amazing terrain in the morning. It’s fun and exciting while wracking and terrifying all at the same time.
Talk to the bike store technician or anyone who experience on mountain bike riding for more pieces of advice when you’re choosing a mountain bike.
Get to know more about the mountain bike you’re going to purchase, such as mountain bike brakes.
Form my experience; mountain bike brakes are powerful to modulate your riding speed. Adjust your speed before the tricky stuff, like rock gardens and corners, and then maintain your speed through them.
Meanwhile, the environment of mountain areas would require you use all the gears often. I mean to shit the right gears in the right condition. Anticipate changes in terrain by shifting before your need to.
2) Road bike
Road bike as the most common bicycle people use it years, it’s good for commute to work. In the morning,, if you riding on your commute road bike, it’s ok, as long as you like to do so.
Your can ride it as your morning exercise in the city street for half hours and buy piece of croissants back home for breakfast.
For me, I like the speed when riding the bicycle, so I choose carbon road bike for my morning cycling. It is generally accepted that carbon fiber road bikes are lighter than aluminum bikes.
Aluminum is heavier than carbon, and it’s easier to fashion a frame to make it as light as possible from carbon than it is from aluminum.
As Reid cycle say , carbon road bike is a makes for a smoother, more comfortable ride.
I am totally agreed with it. Carbon frames used to be susceptible to UV damage, but this is no longer an issue as quality frames made these days contain UV stabilisers.
The main benefit for non-competitive riders is the comfort of a carbon frame. Where aluminium transfers vibration and shock through the bike, carbon has vibration-damping qualities that give a smoother ride.
For me, I reset my Pinarello Gan T600 to fit my high and weight to the best. Size 42.5 lady design Pinarello with 425 seat tube. And the wheel size 700c are perfect for me when riding along the coastline bicycle lands.
Riding in the coastline, nothing can complain with the awesome days out there. Testing out the different gears to control the speed and training the muscle of myself.
Bike-specific clothing makes for a comfortable ride—whether you’re on the road, hitting the trail or commuting to and from work. The special design cycling outfit can help you perform better and ride longer in the open road.
Let’s check below 3 main parts cycling outfits, which prepared for your morning riding.
1) Bike Jerseys
A cycling jersey is a simple garment made of moisture-wicking technical fabric; usually with a front zipper and pockets on the back.
For road cycling you’ll probably stick with either race or club cut. Tight/aero jerseys are intended for racing, and comfort/loose jerseys are great for touring or mountain biking.
Many riders express themselves by picking a jersey design that resonates with them. Go to buy a high visibility and solid color jerseys or a variety of other choices for both man and women.
When I choose bike jerseys for morning riding, I choose the smaller size than what I usually wear. When the fabric attached to your skin tightly, it will help to dry the sweat quickly when riding. Meanwhile, skinny bike jersey improves your riding speed when biking against the wind.
My cycling coach suggests choosing the tight jerseys too, some tight as a second skin in the race or training. When we will have road crash, there are two results:
If you wear loose bike jerseys, your skin will get a scratch but the bike jerseys still ok.
If you wear fit and tight bike jersey, your skin will be protected by bike jersey, that means the bike jersey maybe damage, but you will not get hurt.
Therefore, for your morning riding as a way of training, measure your body size and try it out before you will buy it. Be sure you’re comfortable and it’s fit for long riding.
2. Saddle shorts
The saddle shorts is one of the important outfits for morning cycling. Long distance cycling may require extra comfort from a “Gel” filled chamois pad sewn into a pair of bicycle Shorts. Putting the padding in the shorts means that the padding will always be exactly where you need it.
There are different sizes you can choose and the design for lady or man also has a minor difference. Due to women’s larger hipbones than man, usually, the female chamois having wider ears.
But one thing they all have in common is the ability to cushion the saddle area.
Padded seats tend to have more padding than used at any given time. This pushes the other ‘extra’ padding into the soft tissues. This causes numbness and discomfort over time.
So slim hard seats are actually more comfortable over time, if they are the right size. You need to make sure your sit bones (ischial tuberosity) are well situated. The sit bones of your hips are designed to support weight for long periods of time, where a plush seat disperses your weight to muscles and other areas.
I have several Saddle shorts, have a good saddle short, I can ride comfortably for hours pain and chafe free.
About wash it, it would be good to wear a pair of shorts twice without washing them first.
Many shorts have some anti-microbial properties built into the saddle short that might protect you when riding in the same shorts multiple days in a row. Those properties eventually fade away after repeated washings.
Cycling shoes are shoe purpose-built for cycling. There are a variety of designs depending on the type and intensity of the cycling for which they are intended.
Cycling shoes were designed to provide efficient comfort on recreational rides. Choose a pair of road shoes are perfect for beginning cyclists.
The lightweight fiberglass-reinforced sole gives a direct connection to the pedals for increased power output while the synthetic leather upper enhances strength and stability. Air intake/exhaust system offers continuous ventilation and has more energy-efficient upstroke.
In my previous blog how to teach your kids to stay safe while riding, I had talked about wear a properly fitted helmet for biking. It’s the same important for the adults.
In 2015 NEISS Injury Data, for hospital admissions, the most frequent diagnosis for all four-wheeled sport was a fracture, particularly to the shoulder, arm, elbow, wrist or hand.
A head injury can mean brain injury. Head injuries were the second most frequent diagnosis ranging from 1 in 10 hospitalizations for skating to nearly 4 in 10 hospitalizations for both biking and skateboarding.
In the cycling and training, helmets the most important piece of cycling gear you’ll need. It’s sleek and lightweight design, combined with impact resistant materials will protect your head and brain from injury in any unfortunate topple. With high quality, impact tested and up-to-code constructions choose suitable sizes for your morning riding.
Remember, safe must be the top priority things in all actives and sports. Riding on the road in traffic presents numerous hazards. Oftentimes, accidents occur because drivers don’t see the cyclist. A bike helmet with reflective strips can make you more visible to motorists, especially in the pre-dawn or early evening hours. Choose a brightly colored helmet so drivers can see you better during the day as well.
As we all know, cycling sunglass protecting eyes from dirt, dust and a laundry list of projectiles, meanwhile, sunglasses are the best way to ensure that they won’t suffer from cataracts, keratitis and other eye ailments caused by UV radiation.
The risk of eye damage from the sun is directly related to length and intensity of exposure.
Exposure of the unprotected eye to UV rays can also result in keratitis, a temporary loss of vision coupled with a burning sensation that results from inflammation of the cornea. A secondary solar threat the sun’s heat, can dry out the eyes, cause eye fatigue and perhaps accelerate the negative effects of UV exposure.
When buying a pair, look for a tag indicating their light-absorption qualities, or the opposite, their transmission factor. Several brands of glasses allow of changing out of lenses to allow for environmental conditions.
I have 2 Polycarbonate plastic cycling sunglass so far. It’s durable, lightweight and strong, so it won’t shatter on impact if i do happen to go down. Nice shape frames with a ‘wrap-around’ fit using this material, so the glasses sit more securely on my face. Meanwhile, there my sunglass has some soft grippy rubber pads on the nose and temples to help keep my glasses on my face comfortably.
CAXMAN Polarized Sports Sunglasses TR90 is one of my comfortable cycling sunglass. The unbreakable wrap around semi rimless frame, and oversized frame with great quality of 9 layers polarized lens– filter out 99% of reflected glare without the haze and optical distortion.
Anti-Reflection Film(AR) Technology– helps to protect eyes from the light coming from behind, avoid being distracted by the backside light and gives you a clear and safe vision.
5.Bicycle First aid kit
In outdoor cycling, minor cuts and scrapes usually don’t require a trip to the emergency room. But if it’s serious, you should find the right time seeking for an emergency.
In some of first aid magazine or first aid training center, they usually say use soap and water to clear your cuts and scrape.
Every time, when I read about those, the first question pop my heard:
Where can I get a piece of soap in the outdoor??? Do you bring soap for biking? Well, at least for me, I am not.
Instead, I would rather use drinking water I bring for a bike trip and use bicycle first aid components.
Here is what I was done:
- Wash my hands with drinking water, this helps me avoid infection, also put on disposable protective gloves if it’s available.
- Use Antiseptic Towelette, to clean the wounds quickly. If you do not have this , use daily wipe.
- Stop the bleeding: minor cuts and scrapes usually stop bleeding on their own. If not, apply gentle sterile pressure bandage or clear cloth and elevate the wound.
I have my SJ WORKS bicycle first aid kit attached on the bicycle, it’s not only can have first aid kit around and also can keep my key and phone at the same time.
Get yours from the nearest bicycle stores or check from SJ WORKS Amazon prime store. Sign up Amazon free two day shipping prime if you’re a students.
It doesn’t means that always have to bring the bicycle first aid kit in the carbon bike. For the speeding training, I will not put the bicycle first aid kit on bike, instead, i still have several piece of medical components in the back of my cycling jersey.
Keep it very simple and still can get reach to first aid treatment when it’s necessary.
6. Cycling computer
Base on different results you’re going to measure, if you only need to measure how many distances you’re riding, you can choose the basic and small cycling computer.
Mapping and navigation functionality usually means you will need a larger and more expensive unit, with a much more sophisticated display. And those interested in collecting other data – heart rate, pedaling cadence and power – will need connectivity to peripheral data collection devices, with Bluetooth function.
Cadence sensors and heart rate straps can be bought as extras or are often sold bundled with the GPS unit, though power meters are a much more expensive proposition.
Dehydration first aid usually happens cyclist sweating a lot when biking, being in hot condition for a long time or non-stop for house cycling outdoor.
An adult body is around 55-60% water; drinking water in the early morning is vital for the body to work correctly before doing some sports actives.
Our bodies are pretty dry when you wake up in the morning. Drinking a couple glasses of water to allow the body to rehydrate allows for better digestion and it also helps with moving the lower bowels for regularity in the mornings.
Before going out for biking in the early morning, I would usually like to have a cup of water at home, and bring a bottle of water along with me for the outdoor riding.
In the middle of exercises, if I felt tire, I usually stop for a while and drink much water just in case of dehydration. Get yourself enough water to perform at your best for cycling fun.
If any dehydration first aid happens in your team, here are things you can do :
–Stop biking and find a cool place to have minutes of rest.
— Drink some water or energy drinking to relax you a little bit.
—If possible, lean to your cycling partner or somewhere as comfortable as possible.
—If you have a piece of chocolate in your pocket or bags, try to have a bite.
Bring some snack for your riding, small piece of cake or chocolate, pieces of banana and so on.
I drive about 10 KM away from my home to the coastline for morning cycling, so I can pack some snack sand put in the car. Then go out for riding.
If I am exhausted after riding, I may have some snack back in the car.
Last but not least, go out biking with your good mood. Happiness is everything, and enjoys your riding in the morning and enjoys every moment of your life.
